Zurich’s cultural heritage: we collect and disseminate media on the history, politics, economy and culture of the city and canton of Zurich – known as Turicensia.
The ZB Zürich as a cantonal and city library
The Zentralbibliothek is Zurich’s cantonal and city library. We collect Zurich-related media, showcase them in exhibitions, events and on the web, and store them securely so that Zurich’s cultural heritage is preserved for future generations.
Our collection of Turicensia includes publications of all kinds that have been released in Zurich, written by Zurich residents or deal with the subject of Zurich. Turicensia can be found in the general print and digital holdings of the ZB and in the corresponding special collections.

Holdings
The Zentralbibliothek Zürich compiles as comprehensive a collection of Turicensia as possible. Publications with a Zurich-based author, editor or publisher as well as publications on the subject of Zurich are available in digital and analogue form as part of the general holdings. The historical holdings, pictorial materials, music and maps can be found in the special collections. The ZB collects modern Turicensia on an ongoing basis, including grey literature (e.g. community chronicles, obituaries and association papers) as well as qualification dissertations from the University of Zurich.

Turicensia Lounge: reference library and reading lounge
The Turicensia Lounge is located on the ground floor. Here you will find a compact reference library with selected non-fiction books and reference works on Zurich-related topics as well as fiction by Zurich-based authors. Regional and local newspapers and Zurich magazines complete the range of materials on offer.
Zurich Open Platform (ZOP): digital cultural artefacts from the city and canton of Zurich
The Zurich Open Platform (ZOP) is where we present digital cultural artefacts from the Zentralbibliothek Zürich and other cultural and scientific institutions across the city and canton. ZOP houses new digital publications as well as digitised collections from the 19th and 20th centuries. This open-access repository makes publications available online in full text.
Publishers’ book archives
The publishers’ book archives of around 90 Zurich publishing houses represent a very special collection. Their programmes reflect the cultural and economic conditions of the respective period, while at the same time providing insight into the thematic and creative individuality of the individual publishers.

Zurich Bibliography
The Zurich Bibliography lists information on the history, politics, economy and culture of the city and canton of Zurich – in addition to entire publications, individual book chapters and press articles. They are fully digitally indexed from publication year 2005 and can be searched online via various methods. Older volumes from 1878 onwards can be found in full text on the Zurich Open Platform (ZOP).

Gottfried Keller Bibliography
Are you interested in Gottfried Keller (1819–1890)? The Zurich-based poet and politician is a focal point of our Turicensia collection. His literary work and the research literature on him are documented in the Gottfried Keller Bibliography.
Der bedeutende Schriftsteller Gottfried Keller prägte in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts nicht nur das literarische, sondern als erster Staatsschreiber des Kantons auch das politische Zürich.
In der Bibliographie finden Sie Medien aller Art von und über Gottfried Keller. Zum Beispiel die Ausgaben seiner Werke in verschiedenen Sprachen, internationale Sekundärliteratur, Aufsätze, Artikel aus Tageszeitungen, Hörbücher, Filme und mehr.

We have an archive storing all the books produced by around 90 Zurich-based publishers. They are listed in full online, with links leading directly to the archived titles in the swisscovery library catalogue.

Zurich websites in the Web Archive Switzerland
We archive Zurich websites as part of the Web Archive Switzerland collection. The Swiss National Library is developing the Web Archive Switzerland in collaboration with partner institutions such as the Swiss cantonal libraries. Archived websites can be searched in e-Helvetica Access and accessed at special computer stations. If you are interested in this, please contact the ZB’s information desk.

e-Helvetica Access ist das Einstiegsportal zu den digitalen Sammlungen der Schweizerischen Nationalbibliothek (NB) und zum Webarchiv Schweiz, einer Sammlung von Websites mit Bezug zur Schweiz. Die NB baut die Sammlung Webarchiv Schweiz in Zusammenarbeit mit den Schweizer Kantonsbibliotheken wie der Zentralbibliothek Zürich sowie anderen Schweizer Fachbibliotheken und Archiven auf.
In e-Helvetica Access sind die archivierten Websites im Volltext recherchierbar. Zugänglich sind sie an speziellen Stationen in der NB und in den Partnerinstitutionen, so auch in der Zentralbibliothek Zürich. Bitte wenden Sie sich für den Zugang an die Infotheke.

The ZürichFenster in the Turicensia Lounge provides insights into Zurich’s changing history, literature, culture and society. Selected pictures and a touchscreen invite you to browse the artefacts, while a carefully curated selection of books completes the exhibition section.
‘Zurich in literature’ event series
The ‘Zurich in literature’ (Zürich im Buch) event series is dedicated to books with a strong connection to Zurich and its residents. The selection ranges from exciting novels and short stories to non-fiction books that provide deeper insights into Zurich’s history, culture and life.
Zurich topic page on the ZB website
The Turicensia collection contains countless stories about the canton and the city. Several times a year, we tell you about one of them online on our Zurich page. We present well-known and lesser-known Zurich residents, shed light on superstitions, the cotton industry, the guilds and quantum mechanics – the topics we explore are as diverse as our collection.

e-newspaperarchives.ch ist die Nachfolgeplattform von Presse suisse en ligne, die 2011 von der Schweizerischen Nationalbibliothek (NB) und der Médiathèque Valais gegründet wurde. Sie bietet Zugang zu den Archiven von Zeitungen aus der ganzen Schweiz, die von der Schweizerischen Nationalbibliothek und ihren kantonalen Partnern, unter anderem der Zentralbibliothek Zürich, digitalisiert und online gestellt wurden.

Auf der Plattform e-rara.ch, einem Projekt der Elektronischen Bibliothek Schweiz e-lib.ch, werden digitalisierte alte Drucke aus Schweizer Bibliotheken, unter anderem auch aus der Zentralbibliothek Zürich, öffentlich und kostenlos angeboten. Als erster inhaltlicher Schwerpunkt werden die Schweizer Drucke des 16. Jahrhunderts digitalisiert und aufbereitet. Diverse thematische Kollektionen von gedruckten Büchern sowie gedruckte Karten aus dem 16. bis 19. Jahrhundert erweitern das Angebot.
Auf der Plattform e-manuscripta.ch werden digitalisierte handschriftliche Quellen aus Schweizer Bibliotheken und Archiven, unter anderem auch aus der Zentralbibliothek Zürich, öffentlich und kostenlos angeboten. Die Handschriften und Archivalien stammen aus mehreren Jahrhunderten, das Spektrum reicht von Texten, Briefen und Archivgut über Musikhandschriften bis hin zu Karten, Plänen und anderen graphischen Materialien.
