The Zentralbibliothek Zürich’s Department of Prints and Drawings and Photo Archive are among Switzerland’s most important collections for regional studies and cultural history. Covering the period from the 15th to the 21st century and established in 1854, over the past 170 years they have grown to include around a million artworks.

Holdings
In 1854, Leonhard Ziegler zum Egli’s donation laid the groundwork for the Department of Prints and Drawings at the Zentralbibliothek Zürich. From the late 19th century onwards, our holdings were supplemented by gifts from established upper-class Zurich families and from artists. Over the past 25 years, new additions from various artists’ bequests have sharpened the profile of the canton of Zurich’s art collection. Since the turn of the millennium, the department has also received extensive archives of press photos and from galleries. The library’s collection of paintings additionally includes around 900 paintings, mostly portraits, as well as roughly 350 sculptures and sculptural works.
Views of Switzerland
The collection of views ranges from vistas of all Swiss cantons from the early days of landscape and city depictions in the 16th century, to souvenir sheets for tourists between 1780 and 1850, to documents of Zurich’s transformation into a metropolis around 1900. In addition to watercolours and drawings, it covers prints made via the usual techniques and a large number of photographs and postcards.
Portraits from Switzerland and Europe
The portrait collection spans half a millennium, encompassing paintings, busts, drawings and graphics from the Reformation to the 20th century. Extensive holdings of portraits can be found in the press photo archives and the photographic bequests from the late 20th century.
Thematic collections
The Department of Prints and Drawings looks after 15 smaller thematic collections. These mostly comprise a few thousand sheets and objects, including single-sheet prints, ex libris bookplates, history sheets, postcards and caricatures. Bequests of Zurich art from the 17th to the 21st century
Between 1890 and 1914, the collection received its first significant bequests, specifically from Gottfried Keller, the graphic works of Franz Hegi and the graphic oeuvre of Johann Rudolf Rahn. In the 20th century, the bequest of Robert Breitinger and the partial bequests of Johann Balthasar Bullinger and Clementine Stockar-Escher are worthy of mention.
From the 1990s onwards, contemporary art entered the collection with pre- and posthumous bequests made by Oskar Dalvit, Marguerite Hersberger, Cornelia Hesse-Honegger, Hermann Hubacher, Max Hunziker, and Warja Lavater. The bequests of Bettina (Dora Maria Winternitz), Verena Eggmann, Silvia Luckner, Renée Schwarzenbach-Wille and Ruth Vögtlin have enriched the photo archive with important holdings.

Die Sammlung des 1997 gegründeten Vereins Schweizer Plakatsammlungen (SPS) umfasst Plakate schweizerischer und internationaler Gestalterinnen, Gestalter und Kunstschaffender ab Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts bis heute. Dokumentiert werden die Bereiche Politik und soziales Leben, Kultur und Veranstaltungen, Tourismus sowie Produktwerbung. Ziel des Vereins ist es, die in der Schweiz bestehenden Plakatsammlungen zusammenzuführen und der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich zu machen. Der Kollektivkatalog der Schweizer Plakate erlaubt die sammlungsübergreifende Recherche wie auch die Suche in den Beständen der einzelnen Institutionen.

Our reference library includes specialist literature on subjects such as prints, drawings, motifs and printing techniques, as well as numerous monographs and exhibition catalogues on the artists in the collection. The available works are listed on swisscovery.

Prints, Drawings and Photo Archive
Digitised Material
The following platforms offer digitised copies of selected holdings in the public domain (unique works, photographs, paintings, sculptures, prints and single-sheet prints from the Wickiana collection).
Auf der Plattform e-manuscripta.ch werden digitalisierte handschriftliche Quellen aus Schweizer Bibliotheken und Archiven, unter anderem auch aus der Zentralbibliothek Zürich, öffentlich und kostenlos angeboten. Die Handschriften und Archivalien stammen aus mehreren Jahrhunderten, das Spektrum reicht von Texten, Briefen und Archivgut über Musikhandschriften bis hin zu Karten, Plänen und anderen graphischen Materialien.
Auf der Plattform e-rara.ch, einem Projekt der Elektronischen Bibliothek Schweiz e-lib.ch, werden digitalisierte alte Drucke aus Schweizer Bibliotheken, unter anderem auch aus der Zentralbibliothek Zürich, öffentlich und kostenlos angeboten. Als erster inhaltlicher Schwerpunkt werden die Schweizer Drucke des 16. Jahrhunderts digitalisiert und aufbereitet. Diverse thematische Kollektionen von gedruckten Büchern sowie gedruckte Karten aus dem 16. bis 19. Jahrhundert erweitern das Angebot.
Im Graphikportal werden erstmals die Bestände graphischer Sammlungen aus Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz gemeinsam präsentiert und für die wissenschaftliche Recherche zur Verfügung gestellt. Es dient der Publikation von digitalen Inhalten zu Kunstwerken auf Papier, die vorzugsweise folgenden Sammlungsbeständen entsprechen: Handzeichnungen, Malerei auf Papier (inklusive Inkunabeln) sowie sämtliche druckgraphisch hergestellte Werke. Künstlerische Fotografie wird aufgrund der Vielfalt der Bestände zunächst ausgeschlossen.
Das Graphikportal wird vom Deutschen Dokumentationszentrum für Kunstgeschichte – Bildarchiv Foto Marburg betrieben, einer Einrichtung der Philipps-Universität Marburg. Der Zugang zu den Inhalten des Portals ist kostenfrei.
Das Onlineportal Bilder der Schweiz online (BSO) ermöglicht die Erforschung und Vermittlung des historischen Schweiz-Bildes anhand von topografischer Kunst und Fotografie des 18. bis frühen 20. Jahrhunderts. Das Portal stellt verschiedene Wissensquellen mit einem Schwerpunkt bei den Schweizer Kleinmeistern in digitaler Form bereit. Gemälde, Zeichnungen, Druckgrafiken und Photochrome werden topografisch verortet und mit schriftlichen Quellen aus der Reiseliteratur, Materialien der Tourismusgeschichte und zur künstlerischen Produktion verbunden.

arthistoricum.net ist die zentrale Informationsinfrastruktur des «Fachinformationsdienstes Kunst, Fotografie, Design», die seit 2012 betrieben wird.
Neben der Vermittlung eigener Informationsangebote dient das Portal als interaktiver Präsentations- und Kommunikationsraum für interdisziplinäre Forschungs- und Interessengruppen. arthistoricum.net ist Teil des DFG-Programms «Fachinformationsdienste für die Wissenschaft».
