Digitisation and research
The Digital Production and Platforms department offers a wide range of services related to retrodigitisation and research support for external partners. We continuously digitise selected holdings and make them available online. We also collaborate with partners to create digital editions.
We implement innovative digital initiatives together with digital publishing projects and partners in research and science. In two teams, the Digital Production and Platforms department combines expert knowledge in technology, specific disciplines, information science and library science under one roof.
Digitisation Centre
The Zentralbibliothek Zürich Digitisation Centre (DigiZ) is a centre of competence for retrodigitisation in Switzerland. We scan all types of library holdings according to international standards, including manuscripts, old books, graphic works, photographs, maps and sheet music. In addition, we digitise title pages and tables of contents from new acquisitions by the ZB and other institutions for the library catalogue swisscovery.
Platforms and Data
The Platforms and Data team supports external research projects, implements its own digitisation projects and develops digital editions. We create the necessary metadata and support and coordinate the entire digitisation process.
We are currently working on two projects to create digital editions of special ZB holdings: the correspondence of Hans Georg Nägeli and the writings of Jeanne Hersch. From 2026, we will be working with external partners to create a digital edition of the first editions of Johanna Spyri’s works.
We provide advice on implementation and methods to external publishing and research projects seeking to digitise ZB holdings. In addition, we regularly organise events and workshops to cultivate in-depth exchange with researchers, scientists and other memory institutions.

Digitale Produktion und Plattformen
Retrodigitisation for research projects
For research projects, we offer retrodigitisation of source material from the ZB’s holdings. Together, we analyse the exact requirements and develop suitable solutions tailored to the project (image and metadata, data formats and transfer, etc.). In addition, we calculate reliable information about expenses and required time, allowing research sponsors an insight into the exact costs, work schedules and delivery timelines.
The following aspects are relevant for planning:
- Which of the ZB’s holdings are of interest? Please also state the signatures and, if possible, the number of pages or linear metres.
- Brief description of the project
- Project duration and deadlines, current project status
We recommend that research projects requiring more than 100 scans contact us at an early stage – but no later than during the writing of the research proposal. Please note: the Zentralbibliothek may refrain from digitising for conservation-related or similar reasons.

Collaborations with researchers and scientists
The ZB participates in university research projects, contributing its expertise and commitment. The metadata is created based on project-specific requirements and meets the highest scientific standards. The scientific and technical staff at the ZB will work with you to develop project-specific indexing variants and data models. We are happy to support innovative solutions that promise added value.
Our national and international collaborations are supported by public and private funding institutions and are closely linked to the academic research landscape. As part of our own publishing projects, we process and index key holdings and test innovative workflows.

Newspaper digitisation
Newspapers are important media for the formation of public opinion and are part of our historical cultural heritage. They are key source documents for research and science. That’s why the ZB, as the cantonal and city library, is digitising Zurich newspapers. We work closely with publishers and historical local associations.
While we publish publications with national or even international reach, such as the NZZ and Tages-Anzeiger, on the national newspaper platform e-newspaperarchives.ch, we publish local publications on the Zurich Open Platform (ZOP).

Orders and commissions
Digitisation of the ZB Zurich’s holdings
Digital copies (PDFs) of articles from journals and anthologies or of entire books whose copyright has expired (before 1900) can be ordered conveniently via swisscovery. For further reproductions from the general holdings, please contact the interlibrary loan service, and for digital copies from the special collections, contact the collection in question.
We reserve the right to refrain from digitising materials that are sensitive for conservation reasons.
Digitisation of external holdings
As a centre of competence for retrodigitisation in Switzerland, we offer libraries, archives and museums advice on scanning different materials. If we have the capacity, we can also digitise external material for a fee. Arrange an appointment with our specialists.

Delivery deadlines and prices
The Digitisation Centre will endeavour to process your order as quickly as possible. You should generally receive a download link for the digital images we have created for you within one working week. Delivery times may be longer for larger orders.
Costs are calculated based on the current price list. By submitting the completed order form, you place the order and agree to pay the invoice.
International quality standards
Our Digitisation Centre manages an extensive equipment pool to cater for the variety of templates (formats, materials, states of preservation, etc.). We keep a close eye on technological developments and are always up to date with relevant acquisitions (faster scanners, scanning robots, workflow software).
When it comes to scan quality, we adhere to international standards for format, resolution and colour management. When purchasing scanners, we follow the quality standards developed by Metamorfoze and FADGI for the digitisation of cultural goods. Scanning is done as 24-bit RGB colour TIFF files. This format ensures that the images remain legible over generations with the help of common long-term digital archiving systems.
Platforms, portals and meta-catalogues
The ZB publishes digital cultural artefacts from and about the city and canton of Zurich on the Zurich Open Platform (ZOP). The archive portal ZBcollections allows you to search for our special collection materials from the fields of music, manuscripts, graphics and photography. In addition, our holdings are available on numerous cooperative platforms, in specialist and media-specific portals and in meta-catalogues.
The e-manuscripta and Kartenportal.ch offices are located in the ZB, and we are also involved in the management committees of e-rara, swisscollections, the Répertoire International des Sources Musicales (RISM) and Graphikportal.
Selection of the most important platforms, portals and meta-catalogues
Auf der Zurich Open Platform (ZOP), dem Open-Access-Repositorium der Zentralbibliothek Zürich, werden Publikationen aus und über Zürich (Turicensia) öffentlich und kostenlos angeboten. ZOP macht digitale Turicensia der Gegenwart sowie digitalisierte Turicensia des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts zugänglich. Auf der Plattform sind auch Bestände anderer Kultur- und Wissenschaftseinrichtungen von Stadt und Kanton verfügbar.
In ZBcollections, einem Katalog der ZB-Spezialsammlungen (vor allem der Handschriften- und Musikabteilung und der Graphischen Sammlung), sind die in der Zentralbibliothek Zürich aufbewahrten Nachlässe, Familien- Firmen- und Gesellschaftsarchive sowie grosse Teile der Handschriften verzeichnet und erschlossen.
Auf der Plattform e-manuscripta.ch werden digitalisierte handschriftliche Quellen aus Schweizer Bibliotheken und Archiven, unter anderem auch aus der Zentralbibliothek Zürich, öffentlich und kostenlos angeboten. Die Handschriften und Archivalien stammen aus mehreren Jahrhunderten, das Spektrum reicht von Texten, Briefen und Archivgut über Musikhandschriften bis hin zu Karten, Plänen und anderen graphischen Materialien.
Kartenportal.CH ist der zentrale Einstiegspunkt für die Internetrecherche nach gedruckten und digitalen Karten der Kartensammlungen (u.a. der Zentralbibliothek Zürich), Archive und Geodatenanbieter in der Schweiz.
Auf der Plattform e-rara.ch, einem Projekt der Elektronischen Bibliothek Schweiz e-lib.ch, werden digitalisierte alte Drucke aus Schweizer Bibliotheken, unter anderem auch aus der Zentralbibliothek Zürich, öffentlich und kostenlos angeboten. Als erster inhaltlicher Schwerpunkt werden die Schweizer Drucke des 16. Jahrhunderts digitalisiert und aufbereitet. Diverse thematische Kollektionen von gedruckten Büchern sowie gedruckte Karten aus dem 16. bis 19. Jahrhundert erweitern das Angebot.
Sie finden hier Archivmaterial (inkl. Nachlässe), Bildmaterial, Alte Drucke und Rara, Dokumentensammlungen, Filmmaterial, Handschriften, Karten, Musikaufnahmen, Musiknoten, Textaufnahmen sowie Einträge in Kantonsbibliographien. Es handelt sich um einen Metakatalog, der auf verschiedene Datenpools zugreift.

Im Graphikportal werden erstmals die Bestände graphischer Sammlungen aus Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz gemeinsam präsentiert und für die wissenschaftliche Recherche zur Verfügung gestellt. Es dient der Publikation von digitalen Inhalten zu Kunstwerken auf Papier, die vorzugsweise folgenden Sammlungsbeständen entsprechen: Handzeichnungen, Malerei auf Papier (inklusive Inkunabeln) sowie sämtliche druckgraphisch hergestellte Werke. Künstlerische Fotografie wird aufgrund der Vielfalt der Bestände zunächst ausgeschlossen.
Das Graphikportal wird vom Deutschen Dokumentationszentrum für Kunstgeschichte – Bildarchiv Foto Marburg betrieben, einer Einrichtung der Philipps-Universität Marburg. Der Zugang zu den Inhalten des Portals ist kostenfrei.
Die Datenbank dokumentiert mehr als 32.000 Musikhandschriften und 14.000 Musikdrucke aus 55 öffentlichen und privaten Musiksammlungen (Archive, Bibliotheken, Klöster und Privatsammlungen) der Schweiz. (Quelle: DBIS)
e-newspaperarchives.ch ist die Nachfolgeplattform von Presse suisse en ligne, die 2011 von der Schweizerischen Nationalbibliothek (NB) und der Médiathèque Valais gegründet wurde. Sie bietet Zugang zu den Archiven von Zeitungen aus der ganzen Schweiz, die von der Schweizerischen Nationalbibliothek und ihren kantonalen Partnern, unter anderem der Zentralbibliothek Zürich, digitalisiert und online gestellt wurden.

e-manuscripta office
e-manuscripta is the platform for digitised handwritten sources from Swiss libraries and archives. It is supported cooperatively by four Swiss libraries (University Library Basel, ETH Library Zurich, Swiss National Library and ZB Zürich); the office is part of the Digital Production and Platforms department.
