Rare books
From early prints to bibliophilic rarities, the Rare Books Department preserves valuable cultural heritage for researchers and the public. This can be accessed in person and, in many cases, online.
500 years of book history
You will find the oldest printed books in the Zentralbibliothek Zürich here – around 300,000 volumes from the mid-15th century to 1850, including the second-largest collection of incunabula in Switzerland. In addition, our holdings include old Zurich prints, pamphlets and short writings as well as scientific classics, supplemented by more than 30 private libraries and special works from the 19th to the 21st century.
Our entire holdings are listed online on swisscovery and swisscollections. If you wish to use material in the Special Collections temporary reading room (P20), we kindly ask you to order the desired works online in advance.

Rare Books
Holdings
In addition to historical prints up to 1850, our collection also spans selected works from the 19th to the 21st century, including titles of unique provenance, large-format illustrated works, journal volumes and curiosities. We cover a wide range of subjects and languages from Arabic to Sanskrit. Detailed information on the history of the collection can be found in the ‘Handbuch der historischen Buchbestände der Schweiz’ [Handbook of Switzerland’s historical book collections], Volume 3, pp. 365−491 (PDF).
Incunabula
With 1,562 early printed books (incunabula), we have the second-largest collection in Switzerland. It is described in detail in the ‘Inkunabelkatalog der Zentralbibliothek Zürich’ [Incunabula Catalogue of the Zentralbibliothek Zürich]. Contained within it are numerous relics from the early days of book printing, such as:
- Various editions of the Nuremberg Chronicle (Schedelsche Chronik)
- The first dated Swiss print from 1470
- The oldest Zurich print (made around 1479)
- The Malermi Bible of 1471 with artistically outstanding book decoration by the Master of Pico
Zurich prints
One central focus of the collection is Zurich book production, which reached its first peak with Christoph Froschauer’s shop in 1519. After a period of decline, culture and book production experienced a new heyday in the mid-18th century, particularly shaped by the publishing house Orell, Gessner & Co., which underwent a merger in 1771 to form Orell, Gessner, Füssli & Co.
Illustrated works
Our gems include illustrated works from the 16th to the 19th century featuring engravings, etchings and lithographs. Geographical and scientific works from the library of the Naturforschende Gesellschaft Zürich, founded in 1746, as well as works on antiquity and architecture (shelf marks Aeg, Fol, KK and KK bis) in particular were often furnished with elaborate illustrations, some hand-coloured.
Pamphlets and short writings
Of our collections of pamphlets and short writings, the following should be highlighted:
- Numerous pamphlets from the Reformation (various shelf marks)
- A collection on the Thirty Years’ War, established by the Zurich-based priest Josias Waser (1598–1629) – Description U.B. Leu: ‘Nuhu trit herfur o pfalzischer Lew’
- Wedding poems
- Eulogies/obituaries from the 17th to the 19th century (partly digitised)
- About 7,500 pamphlets from the French Revolution, formerly owned by Paul Usteri
- Geneva political pamphlets from 1725 to 1846
Private libraries
Of more than 30 private libraries of various individuals from the worlds of literature, music, politics, journalism, religion, administration, business and science, some have been left in their original order, some reconstructed and digitised. Among them:
- Huldrych Zwingli (1484–1531)
- Heinrich Bullinger (1504–1575)
- Johann Jakob Bodmer (1698–1783)
- Johann Caspar von Orelli (1787–1849)
- Gottfried Keller (1819–1890)
- Conrad Ferdinand Meyer (1825–1898)
The holdings continue to be expanded, most recently with a collection of Russian and Bohemian works from Felix Philipp Ingold (born 1942).
You will find a list of the private libraries in the holdings of the Rare Books Department here (PDF).
Donation books from the Zurich city library
The three donation books from the Zurich city library record the books donated each year and the names of the donors from the library’s foundation in 1629 to 1881. Transcriptions are available on e-manuscripta.ch; the third and final volume is currently in progress. In addition, selected frequent donors are listed by name in swisscovery and swisscollections. Both are important data for provenance research.
