Lunch & Learn: Knowledge without Borders – But with Locks?
Presenter: Hannah Brodersen | University of Bern
Open Science envisions a world where research and data move freely across borders — yet today’s volatile geopolitical climate and digital vulnerabilities demand a new awareness of Knowledge Security. This emerging concept raises complex questions about how to share openly while protecting sensitive information, intellectual property, and national interests.
Swiss institutions are only beginning to engage with developments that have been underway in Europe and the United States for several years. As regulatory and cultural change takes time, the challenge is to remain adaptable in a fast-evolving environment where policies risk becoming outdated almost as soon as they are written.
Guided by three questions — What is Knowledge Security and why is it relevant? Is there tension with Open Science? How can we balance both? — this session explores how research can stay as open as possible, yet as secure as necessary.
