This course will equip you to manage a public communal or school library and to shape and take responsibility for change processes.


The advanced course builds on the knowledge acquired in the basic or foundation course. You will also consider experience from professional practice, and critically assess your own work as a librarian and conduct as a manager. Once you have completed the course you will understand your own management style.

Target audience

The course is aimed at employees in management positions in communal and school libraries.

Admission requirements

  • Successful completion of a consolidation course, SAB foundation course or other basic course
  • Completed vocational training or middle-school certificate (secondary level II)
  • Good knowledge of Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Good written and verbal skills
  • Communicative person who likes dealing with people, team player

Course length and dates

70 lessons (of 45 minutes each) incl. excursions, excl. self-learning time for preparation and follow-up work and for practical exercises.

Course fees

CHF 800 for participants from the canton of Zurich

CHF 1,200 for participants from other cantons

Recommendation for the communes: please make an appropriate contribution to the course fees.

Course details and application process

If the number of applicants exceeds the places available, preference will be given to applicants from the canton of Zurich. The course management will decide whether or not to accept applicants once it has reviewed their applications. There is no waiting list.
