Branch courses

As well as attending vocational college and working in companies, learners aiming to qualify as Certified Information and Documentation Specialists attend “branch courses” (“überbetriebliche Kurse”, üK).


Branch courses are the third main element of the training system, and attendance is compulsory. The courses impart both basic practical skills needed in the profession and theoretical knowledge, ensuring that all learners receive standardised, high-quality training and also shifting a substantial burden away from companies. The course objectives are set out in the training plan.


Number of courses and course days (former educational plan)

Seven branch courses (29 course days) are held, extending over three years of training. The courses for the Zurich region take place at the Zentralbibliothek Zürich.

Course content and duration

  • üK1: Cataloguing I: 5 days in the 1st semester
  • üK2: Customer relations: 4 course days in the 2nd semester
  • üK3: Cataloguing II: 5 course days in the 3rd semester
  • üK4: Research I: 4 course days in the 4th semester
  • üK5: Archival cataloguing with certificate of competence: 3 course days in the 4th semester
  • üK6: Cataloguing III with certificate of competence: 5 course days in the 5th semester
  • üK7: Research II with certificate of competence: 3 course days in the 5th semester

  • üK3: Archival cataloguing, with certificate of competence: 4 course days in the 2nd semester
  • üK4: Customer relations: Providing information and expertise, with certificate of competence: 3 course days in the 3rd semester
  • üK5: Projects in public relations: 3 course days in the 4th semester
  • üK6: Trends and developments in the professional field: 2 course days in the 5th semester
  • üK7: Data processing and linked data: 5 course days in the 5th semester
