Popular Literature

The Zentralbibliothek Zürich's comprehensive literary collection is available to all free of charge. "Bestsellers" at the ZB include popular volumes such as biographies, self-help books, travel guides, DVDs, audio books, etc. This type of material is held by the ZB as Zurich's city and cantonal library, in order to complement the Pestalozzi Library (PBZ). Its Turicensia mandate is important in this regard, as it includes all Zurich publishing houses and authors. In contrast to the PBZ, the ZB usually stocks only one copy of a "bestseller", but it also does not part with older books.

Fiction and Poetry

The Zentralbibliothek stocks a wealth of literary works such as novels, stories, poetry and dramas. Literature studied at the University (the canon of World Literature) is also available: We stock modern and old classics in their original languages and often in German translation.

The North American Library at the ZB (NAB) is an important collection (around 85'000 volumes) of American and Canadian fiction. It can be accessed in the Freihand section of the library (stack 03, shelf mark NABM). Here you can find out more about the NAB collection.

Non-fiction books

You will find what you are looking for at the ZB! In addition to fiction, the Zentralbibliothek also offers a wide variety of non-fiction books to the general public: travel guides and hiking guides, DVDs and CDs, self-help books and cookbooks, Zurich newspapers and magazines in printed and electronic format.
